Active Citizens Fund in Slovenia
Active Citizens Fund in Slovenia is aiming at strengthening civil society organisations, promoting active citizenship and empowering vulnerable groups. Slovenia is one of 15 beneficiary EU member states of Active Citizens Fund financial assistance donated by Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway.
PROGRAMME RESULTS – OVERVIEW
The Active Citizens Fund (ACF) in Slovenia was implemented during a period of significant societal and political change, including the Covid-19 pandemic and shifts in government, which affected civil society, human rights, and democratic processes. The programme aimed to strengthen civil society, promote active citizenship, and empower vulnerable groups, addressing challenges such as limited long-term investment in NGO development, low civic engagement, and regional disparities between established and grassroots organizations.
With a flexible and results-oriented approach, ACF Slovenia supported civil society organizations (CSOs) across the country, enabling them to defend human rights, promote democratic values, and foster civic participation. The programme also emphasized capacity building, innovative advocacy, and partnerships with donor countries, creating sustainable mechanisms for civil society development and enhancing regional and cross-border cooperation.
Through targeted support, ACF Slovenia contributed to measurable improvements in advocacy, civic education, empowerment of vulnerable groups, and organizational capacity, demonstrating both resilience and adaptability in responding to emerging societal challenges.
