Redefining Partnership as Marriage: Where We Are and Where We Would Like to Be

The Act Amending the Family Code (DZ-B Amending Act) defines the redefinition of partnership as marriage – the deadline for redefining partnership as marriage was six months after the adoption of the DZ-B Amending Act, i.e. 31 July 2023. If partners failed to declare that they would like to redefine their partnership as marriage in this period, their partnership ended on the specified date.

With this project, Association Legebitra aims to improve the procedure for redefining same-sex partnerships as same-sex marriages. The project addresses the lack of instructions that the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Labor, Family, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities should have provided to local government units across Slovenia, thus resolving any unclarities pertaining to the management of procedures for redefining partnerships as marriages.

For the purpose of the project, Association Legebitra worked closely with the said ministries and provided additional information about the procedure for redefining partnerships as marriages, which was possible until 31 July 2023, to both local government units and same-sex couples.
