The right direction

Call for proposals: Micro or “rapid response” projects
Project duration: 15 Nov 2020–14 May 2021
Project budget: 5,000.00 EUR

During their studies, students face various challenges: getting used to the new environment, full-time participation in lectures, collecting study materials, finding an effective way of learning, facing difficult exams and the like. All this is even more difficult for students with special needs – students with various disabilities and other groups of students who need additional adjustments and support to participate effectively in the study process. When most of the study process took place on the premises of the faculties, both the students and the teaching staff at the faculties knew how to face the stated challenges.

Measures to limit the spread of covid-19 infections had a strong impact on higher education. Study activities – lectures, exercises, exams – are carried out online. This has negative consequences for all students and especially for the students who face additional barriers.

The Slovenian Association of Disabled Students will prepare recommendations and tips for higher education teachers. One set of tips will be on how to design study materials that can be read and used by all students – including those who are visually or hearing impaired or have other problems that prevent them from reading the learning materials. The second set of recommendations will concern the implementation of online lectures: what they should be like so that the learning materials can be followed by all students, including the visually or hearing impaired or those who have other limitations. The third set of recommendations will address the various options and tools that allow for effective examinations during covid-19 measures.

At the same time, we will provide additional enhanced support to the students by publishing tips and incentives for online study. We will also encourage the students to convey the hardships they experience and to connect with each other through artistic expression.

To provide permanent access to the created content we will publish the recommendations on our website and design a manual by the end of the project.

After the completion of the project we will still offer counseling for the higher education teachers so that they will be able to efficiently support the students with special needs during their studies.
